Many times, electronic spectra are measured when the sample is very cold so that all of the electrons are in the ground electronic state. For samples that have low-lying excited states, liquid helium can be used. Ni is one example, having an excited electronic state at ~200 cmรข1. If the Ni atom has a term symbol of 3F2 for its electronic ground state, what will be the allowed excited states?
